I want to experience as may truly cool cars as possible. While taking a trip to San Diego, I was given the opportunity to upgrade my rental car up to the BMW 840 for a reasonable price. So, naturally, I went for it.

Honestly, it’s a nice car, but it just wasn’t for me. First, the good. The silhouette was elegant. Classic sports car proportions. Build quality felt great. Apple CarPlay integration was smooth. Engine note was good. Acceleration was solid, but not elite.
The biggest downside was its size. It’s supposedly the coupe version of a 7-series sedan. So, it looked like a sports car, but really was a luxury cruiser or a, ‘sexy sedan’ as a friend put it. More smooth, less engaging. The nose of the car seemed miles ahead of me. Also, kind of a weird note, but it had rear steer as well. It definitely improved the turning radius, but made hard turns feel very computer controlled.

In general, I am challenged by BMWs. They are great driver’s cars. But for such high end vehicles, I prefer sports cars. This kinda makes the M3/M4 the best candidate. But it’s so close to price, performance, and style to a Porsche, I’ll always think about the Porsche alternative.
