So, I guess you truly are a “car guy” if, just one week after a pair of nine-hour road trips, you spend your Saturday driving two hours out of your way just to get gas. But that is exactly what I did to make my first-ever visit to a Buc-ee’s.
Going to Buc-ee’s is definitely a “God Bless America!” moment in how simultaneously ridiculous and awesome it is. It’s a gas station with about three blocks’ worth of pumps. While most highway rest stops feature a myriad of different fast-food vendors, with Buc-ee’s, it’s just Buc-ee’s.

Inside, they have the water, soda, and beer refrigerators you’d see in a standard 7-Eleven, but scaled up to Costco proportions. The same goes for the snacks. The likable beaver logo is plastered on just about everything you can imagine to satisfy your shopping needs.
But the star of the show is the BBQ. There is a massive pit in the middle of the store where they prepare fresh brisket, pulled pork, and other meats for the masses. I went with the brisket sandwich. Not bad at all!
Apparently, Buc-ee’s is a cultural phenomenon. If you mention it to anyone from the American South, they know all about it and swear by it. When I moved to Virginia a couple of years ago, I started hearing the legends. The very first Virginia location opened in mid-2025, with two more currently planned. Naturally, since it involved a road trip and cars, I had to check it out.

Good times!
